Cathedral Publishing House

CATHEDRAL is a publishing house with the mission of inspiring the next generation of Christian tradesmen.

Founded by the roofer Charles Clark out of his love for the trades, Cathedral seeks to be the go-to publishing house for talented writers within the trades who want to publish books—for adults or children—that inspire.

Collaborating with Charles, we sought to create a brand identity that appeals to the Christian classical and home education crowd while also feeling distinct from other publishing companies within this niche. In the end, we crafted a brand identity that feels distinctive and awe-inspiring, centering on a celebration of the greatest work the Christian trade guilds of old put their hands to: the medieval cathedral.

The Logo Suite

This logo suite positions Cathedral as a respectable institutional force in the Christian classical and home education world. The primary logo presents Cathedral as a provider of timeless, high-quality titles anchored in the Christian faith; it was carefully crafted to be unique and ownable—being based on a small Russian Orthodox chapel in Charles Clark's hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Project

Color Palette & Typography

The color palette we selected for Cathedral Publishing House is a monochromatic color scheme, inspired by blue denim jeans, and honest, blue collar work. Blue feels trustworthy, friendly, honest, and strong, which makes this color palette perfect for a publishing house intending to inspire the next generation of tradesmen.

Aviano is our primary typeface and is the font used in our logo; it feels classical, strong, honest, and classy all at the same time, pairing well with the functional and readable Josefin Sans as a secondary typeface.

Closing Thoughts

Most people would expect a publishing company dedicated to the trades to look earthy, raw, and less-than-glorious.

In collaboration with Charles Clark, we figured out that doing the opposite—focusing on the glorious potential of the trades—would be more appealing to our target audience and make Cathedral's brand more memorable.

This brand identity positions Cathedral as the only real choice in its niche. Cathedral now looks, sounds, and feels like the provider of high-quality publications by tradesmen, for tradesmen. And that's a great position to be in. ✦
